Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions about Living the Grid and the pixel grid workflow.
Getting Started
What is Living the Grid?
Living the Grid is a browser-based pixel grid maker for Tomodachi Life. It converts images into editable grids, matches colors to a game-compatible palette, and exports numbered PNG patterns you can copy by hand.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Living the Grid works without accounts, logins, or downloads. Open the site and start uploading images immediately.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. The grid maker and painting guide are designed for a two-screen workflow: prepare on your computer and use your phone as a reference while painting on the Switch.
Images & Privacy
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. All image processing happens locally in your browser. Your images never leave your device.
How are projects saved?
Projects are saved to your browser's local storage. They persist between visits on the same browser and device. Export important projects as JSON backups.
Can I share my projects with others?
You can export PNG patterns and share them directly. JSON project files can be imported by anyone using Living the Grid. See the QR Gallery for shared community designs.
Grid Maker & Tools
What grid sizes are available?
Common presets include 16x16, 24x24, 32x32, 48x48, and wide formats like 48x32 and 64x24. Custom sizes are also supported. See the Grid Size Chart for a full reference.
What is the Game-compatible 84 palette?
It is an 84-color palette designed to match the colors available in Tomodachi Life Palette House. Using it ensures your pixel grid colors can be reproduced in-game. Browse all colors on the Color Palette page.
What are numbered patterns?
Numbered patterns assign a number to each color in the grid, turning the design into a paint-by-numbers worksheet for easier manual copying. Learn more in the Numbered Patterns Guide.
Palette House & Game
What is Palette House?
Palette House is the in-game design tool in Tomodachi Life where you can paint custom designs on clothing, posters, TV screens, and room decor. Read the Palette House Guide for setup instructions.
Do I need Pro-Artist Mode?
Pro-Artist Mode gives you a square brush and more control. It is recommended for copying pixel grid patterns accurately. See the Brush Guide for setup steps.
Can Living the Grid import designs directly into the game?
No. Living the Grid creates reference patterns that you copy by hand into Palette House. It does not modify game files.
